I really appreciated this. What stood out to me was the distinction between simply using AI and building a system that gets smarter the more you use it.
That feels especially important for writers on Substack. Anyone can ask AI to help draft, summarize, or organize. The more valuable question is whether we are preserving our own judgment, patterns, field experience, reader interactions, and decision-making in a way that keeps compounding over time.
I also liked the idea of a decision log. It makes the learning loop feel practical instead of abstract: what did I notice, how did I judge it, and what will I try next. That seems like a simple way to make sure AI supports the writer’s thinking rather than replacing it.
Thank you so much, Patrick! I'm really glad the distinction between "using AI" and "building a system that gets smarter with use" resonated with you. You summed up the decision log perfectly — what did I notice, how did I judge it, and what will I try next. That loop is exactly what I want to keep practicing myself, so your comment is a great encouragement. Thanks again for reading and for such a thoughtful response!
Thank you. I’m really glad it reflected what you were aiming for.
That loop feels valuable because it keeps the human judgment visible. The AI may help with speed, structure, or output, but the noticing, judging, and deciding still have to belong to the person using it.
I appreciated how clearly your piece made that distinction.
